What’s New in AirTag (2nd Gen)
The new AirTag features Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, the same technology found in the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air,
and Apple Watch Ultra 3. This upgrade focuses on accuracy, reach, and real-world reliability — not cosmetic changes.
Precision Finding Gets a Major Boost
Precision Finding now works from up to 1.5× farther range — a 50% improvement over the original AirTag.
Users receive clearer directional arrows, stronger haptic feedback, and better visual cues to locate lost items faster.
For the first time, Apple Watch users can also use Precision Finding on Series 9+, Ultra 2+ via watchOS 26.2.1.
Louder Speaker & Better Detection
One of the biggest complaints about the original AirTag was its quiet speaker — Apple fixed that.
- 🔊 Speaker is 50% louder
- 📏 Audible from twice the distance
- 🎵 New alert tone designed for noisy environments
An upgraded Bluetooth chip also improves detection range even when Precision Finding isn’t available.
Privacy & Anti-Stalking Improvements
Apple continues to strengthen privacy with:
- End-to-end encrypted location data
- Frequently rotating Bluetooth identifiers
- Cross-platform unwanted tracking alerts
These protections work across iOS and Android, reinforcing Apple’s commitment to responsible tracking.
Find My Network & Airline Support
A powerful new feature called “Share Item Location” allows users to temporarily share an AirTag’s location with others —
including airlines during baggage recovery.
More than 50 airlines now support AirTag location links. Reports show:
- ✈️ 26% reduction in baggage delays
- 🧳 Up to 90% fewer permanently lost bags
Battery Life & Compatibility
Battery life remains unchanged at over one year using a user-replaceable CR2032 battery.
The good news: original AirTags remain compatible with most new Find My features wherever hardware allows.
Pricing & Availability
- 💲 $29 for one AirTag
- 💲 $99 for a four-pack
Orders are live now on Apple.com and the Apple Store app, with in-store availability rolling out later this week.
Apple also introduced a new $35 FineWoven keychain in five colors.
Final Verdict
With longer range, a louder speaker, deeper Find My integration, and expanded airline support,
the second-generation AirTag fixes its biggest weaknesses without raising the price.
It comfortably strengthens Apple’s lead over competitors like Tile and signals long-term ecosystem growth —
even without a visible redesign.
