Stealth, speed, and strategy — Sukhoi is reshaping the future of aerial warfare.
As of January 2026, Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau is back in global headlines with major upgrades to its fifth-generation fighter jets and expanding defense ties with India. Despite sanctions and geopolitical pressure, programs like the Su-57 and Su-75 Checkmate show Russia’s intent to remain a dominant air power player.
Russia began flight testing its next-generation “Product 177” engine on the Su-57 in late December 2025. Designed using operational lessons from the Ukraine conflict, the engine delivers higher thrust, better fuel efficiency, and improved combat reliability.
According to Rostec, early test sorties showed stable and reliable performance. If trials continue as planned, Russia aims to ramp up Su-57 production to over 20 aircraft in 2026, strengthening its fifth-generation fleet.
Su-75 Checkmate: Maiden Flight Expected in 2026
The Su-75 “Checkmate”, a single-engine stealth fighter aimed primarily at export markets, is finally nearing its first flight after years of delays. Prototypes are reportedly close to completion at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur manufacturing plant.
Powered by the advanced Izdeliye 30 engine, the Su-75 promises high maneuverability and reduced operating costs. While often compared to the F-35, the aircraft still lacks confirmed international orders, largely due to geopolitical uncertainty.
India–Russia Defense Ties Grow Stronger
Sukhoi has informed Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) that nearly 50% of the infrastructure required for local Su-57 production in India is already in place. A recent audit covered facilities in Nashik and other key locations.
India is reportedly evaluating the acquisition of around 60 Su-57 fighters as it balances existing Rafale deals and responds to China’s expanding stealth aircraft fleet. Additionally, a new HAL–UAC agreement to assemble the Sukhoi Superjet 100 in India marks growing cooperation in civil aviation.
Recent Aircraft Incidents
In November 2025, a Su-30 crashed during a training mission, tragically killing both pilots. Earlier in the year, multiple Su-34 incidents resulted in successful ejections. As of early 2026, no major Sukhoi crashes have been reported.
