Jana Nayagan Release Halted: Court Slams CBFC Delay

Jana Nayagan

“When cinema meets power, even release dates go to court.”

Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited political action thriller Jana Nayagan has hit a major roadblock just days before its planned worldwide release on January 9, 2026. Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, the film was expected to dominate Pongal 2026 box office collections. Instead, it landed in a legal storm.

Starring Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol, Jana Nayagan is special for fans as it marks Vijay’s final film before his full-time political entry through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Made on a massive ₹142 crore budget, expectations were sky-high.

🎥 CBFC Certification Controversy

The trouble began with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The Examining Committee had already approved the film for a UA certificate on December 22, 2025, asking for minor changes. The makers completed all modifications and resubmitted the film by December 29.

However, on January 5, 2026, the CBFC unexpectedly referred the film to a Revising Committee after receiving a complaint. The complaint alleged that the film hurt religious sentiments and misrepresented the armed forces. This sudden move forced the producers to approach the Madras High Court with an urgent writ petition.

⚖️ Madras High Court’s Strong Verdict

On January 9, 2026, Justice P.T. Asha delivered a sharp verdict, directing the CBFC to immediately grant the UA certificate. The court called the complaint an “afterthought” and warned that such actions could create a “dangerous trend” in film certification.

The judge ruled that once the Examining Committee approves a film and required changes are made, certification becomes automatic, and the CBFC Chairperson has no authority to reopen the process. Senior Advocate Satish Parasaran argued for the producers, while ASG ARL Sundaresan represented the CBFC.

📉 Release Delay & Industry Impact

Due to the legal uncertainty, KVN Productions officially postponed the release on January 7, citing unavoidable circumstances. Several theatres, including Victory Cinema in Karnataka, canceled shows and issued refunds.

The delay may benefit rival Pongal releases, especially Siva Karthikeyan’s Parasakthi. As of now, no new release date has been announced, but the makers have requested fans to remain patient.

Bhagavanth Kesari Effect: How Balakrishna’s Film Is Shaping South Cinema Even in 2026

Bhagavanth Kesari

“One Film. One Message. And a Legacy That Refuses to Fade.”

Bhagavanth Kesari, the 2023 Telugu action drama starring Nandamuri Balakrishna, is once again making headlines in early 2026 — not because of a re-release, but due to its lasting impact on Indian cinema. Directed by Anil Ravipudi, the film blended mass action with a strong women empowerment message, helping it cross the ₹100 crore mark at the box office.

More than two years after its release, the film continues to influence discussions across industries, proving that its relevance hasn’t faded.

🎬 Remake Buzz That Sparked Debate

The renewed attention intensified after the trailer of Thalapathy Vijay’s upcoming Tamil film Jana Nayagan, scheduled for release on January 9, 2026. Directed by H. Vinoth, the film quickly drew comparisons with Bhagavanth Kesari due to similar plot elements and character arcs.

While Vinoth has neither confirmed nor denied remake claims, calling it “a purely Thalapathy Vijay film,” fans weren’t fully convinced. Social media debates erupted after reports suggested Vijay watched the original film multiple times. The trailer also faced criticism for alleged AI-generated visuals and lack of originality. Many Tollywood insiders believe the emotional intensity and mass appeal of Balakrishna’s performance remain unmatched.

🏆 Awards That Cemented Its Status

Bhagavanth Kesari received major recognition at national and regional platforms. It won Best Feature Film in Telugu at the 71st National Film Awards (2025) and secured the Telangana Gaddar Award for Third Best Feature Film.

The film also bagged Best Film – Telugu at SIIMA 2024, while Anil Ravipudi won Best Director – Telugu at IIFA Utsavam 2024. Performances by Balakrishna and Sreeleela earned multiple nominations at Filmfare South and other prestigious award ceremonies, highlighting the film’s emotional depth beyond action.

💰 Box Office Power & Lasting Legacy

Released during Dussehra on October 19, 2023, the movie strengthened Balakrishna’s career streak after Akhanda and Veera Simha Reddy. The success reportedly led him to increase his remuneration from ₹18 crore to ₹28 crore per project.

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video since November 24, 2023, the film continues to attract new audiences. Despite mixed opinions on formulaic elements, its women-centric theme and mass appeal helped redefine Balakrishna’s legacy at 65 — inspiring cross-industry adaptations and conversations.
