Election Schedule

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced the schedule for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. Voting will take place in a single phase on April 23, 2026 across all 234 constituencies. The counting of votes will be conducted on May 4, 2026, just days before the current assembly’s term ends on May 10.

The election process begins with the gazette notification on March 30. Candidates can file nominations until April 6, followed by scrutiny on April 7. The final date for withdrawing nominations is April 9. The schedule ensures the entire electoral process concludes before the constitutional deadline of May 6.

With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force, restricting government announcements of new schemes and regulating the use of official resources during campaigning.

Voter Details

Tamil Nadu has a massive electorate of approximately 5.67 crore voters. According to the latest electoral roll update:

  • Men: 2.77 crore
  • Women: 2.89 crore
  • Transgender voters: 7,617

A recent Special Intensive Revision added nearly 27 lakh new voters while removing about 70 lakh names from the rolls to maintain accuracy.

Polling will be conducted at around 75,032 booths across the state, with nearly 25 lakh officials deployed to manage the electoral process and ensure smooth voting.

Political Landscape

The 2026 election is shaping up to be a high-stakes contest in Tamil Nadu politics. The ruling DMK-led Secular Democratic Alliance, headed by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, is seeking re-election after securing 159 seats in 2021.

The opposition includes the AIADMK-BJP led NDA alliance. Meanwhile, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is emerging as a new force, promising welfare initiatives such as ₹2,500 monthly assistance for women and free LPG cylinders.

Other players include Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), which is contesting independently. Alliances remain dynamic, with the DMK expanding its coalition by adding DMDK and MNM. TVK has reportedly rejected alliance offers from major parties.

Key Election Issues

Several critical issues are expected to dominate the campaign:

  • Safety and crimes against women
  • Delivery of welfare schemes
  • State debt and economic concerns
  • Unfulfilled political promises

The Election Commission has also highlighted improved polling arrangements, including enhanced facilities at booths and strict VVPAT verification procedures to ensure transparency.

What This Election Could Mean

The 2026 Tamil Nadu election could significantly reshape the state’s political landscape. With a potential four-way contest involving major alliances and emerging parties, voter turnout will play a decisive role.

Analysts believe the results may redefine the balance of power in Dravidian politics and determine the trajectory of governance in the state for the next five years.
