El Mencho Killed in Military Raid

El Mencho

A Major Victory or the Start of a New Cartel War?

1. The Deadly Raid in Jalisco

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho”, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed on February 22, 2026, during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.

The 59-year-old cartel boss, who carried a $15 million U.S. bounty, reportedly died from injuries sustained in a firefight while being airlifted to Mexico City. Six cartel gunmen were killed, two were captured, and authorities seized heavy weaponry including rocket launchers.

This marks one of the biggest blows to organized crime in Mexico in recent years.

2. Cartel Retaliation Sparks Chaos

Within hours of the announcement, violence erupted across multiple states — Jalisco, Guanajuato, Nayarit, Michoacán, and Tamaulipas.

  • Vehicles torched on highways
  • Pharmacies and gas stations set ablaze
  • Road blockades causing mass panic
  • Businesses forced to shut down

In Guadalajara, streets emptied as residents sheltered indoors. Puerto Vallarta airport witnessed frantic scenes as smoke rose from burning vehicles. Though no riot-related deaths were officially reported, property damage was extensive.

3. Government Declares Code Red

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro declared a “Code Red” emergency.

  • Public transport suspended
  • Schools and universities closed
  • Major events canceled
  • Liga MX matches postponed

President Claudia Sheinbaum vowed a strong response, deploying the army, National Guard, and federal police units. International concern followed, with the U.S. and Canada issuing travel alerts.

4. CJNG: Inside the Violent Empire

The CJNG is considered one of the most powerful and violent cartels in the world, controlling fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine trafficking networks.

El Mencho, known for his low-profile lifestyle despite immense power, built the cartel into a global criminal empire. Several of his family members were deeply involved in operations, including his imprisoned son and brother.

5. What Happens Next?

Security experts warn that El Mencho’s death could trigger internal power struggles within CJNG factions, potentially escalating violence.

Analysts fear that regional commanders may fight for control, similar to cartel wars seen in the past. Concerns are especially high as Guadalajara prepares to host matches during the 2026 World Cup.

Former officials emphasize that dismantling financial networks and supply chains may prove more effective than targeting leaders alone.

The question remains: Is this the beginning of peace — or a new chapter of instability?
